Of the time we spent in Amsterdam, six gorgeous nights were spent at Amphora B&B.
From the moment we walked into the apartment, we felt right at home. One half of the super hosts, Niels, was there to greet us and settle us in. We were just amazed by how thoughtful they were – it was so refreshing to see little nibbles like nuts and scrumptious apple tarts prepared for us (when you’re tired from a rather long travel journey, really nice to have treats awaiting you), fresh flowers, a bottle of wine, chocolates and the breakfast, oh boy, the breakfast! Our hosts said that breakfast would “last” for 2-3 days, but frankly the amount of bread, cereal, occasional extra treats like croissants and eggs lasted us our entire week there!
Not to mention, it’s like they really have thought of everything – butter, jams, Nutella, ham and cheese, orange juice, milk, everything you need to start your day!
And then, there’s the whole gorgeousness of the apartment. It’s on the ground floor of a canal house (built in 1857!), in an area that is lovely (the Jordan and near attractions like Anne Frank House, Westerkerk and with nearby tram stop to other areas if you don’t feel like walking too much), with a big dining table (great space for planning itineraries etc), sofa seating area, kitchen, big bed, shower and separate WC area. My favourite part? The beautiful mosaic design works around the house which Greet did (she’s the other half of the super hosts, the main contact point during the reservation process). Greet’s an artist, we never made it to her atelier but if you have time, you should check her place out.
As we are a very self-sufficient kind of couple, we didn’t really need a lot of help from the hosts so we only met up with Greet many days after we had checked in – and it was really wonderful chatting with her too. She was also really helpful with regard to Museum Night 2015 (which we had bought tix for online from Singapore) as the official website was primarily in Dutch and she helped narrow down some of the places we should visit.
She was also helpful in the reservations process – advising about booking for taxis, buying tickets early online, restaurants to visit etc. We used the electric taxi service from the Central Station – we had 2 huge suitcases, so a taxi was our only option and the service was professional and you know you were not getting “fleeced”. Think it was around 10€.
Greet and Niels really are awesome hosts, we were also very impressed with their sincerity – we mistakenly passed them extra cash as payment, which they later realized and returned to us. We didn’t even realise so we were really impressed with their integrity.
So all in all, this really is a great place to stay – especially if you would like an authentic experience of living in a canal house and really feel like Amsterdam is your home, even if for a few nights!
