Update 8 December 2016: Naughty Nuri’s Katong has closed and has been replaced by Wicked Grill.
Naughty Nuri’s hails from Ubud, Bali and is most famous for its barbequed ribs, rather than more classic “Indonesian” fare. And with good reason.
Sticky, sweet, fall-off-the-bone meat with scrumptious burnt bits (aren’t burnt bits the best?) – even a non-rib lover like myself fell in love with the ribs here.
I love the almost black-as-night shiny Balinese BBQ sauce, that reminds me of kecap manis, slathered over the ribs, much more to my taste than American BBQ sauce or the smoky, spiced Cajun dry rub style.
The outlet at Tanjong Katong is the second one to be opened here in Singapore, the first being at Capitol Piazza.
Maybe it’s good, old Katong that sets the scene, but this “roadside” venue, bright ambience, simple décor adds a kampong-like feel to the outlet in the East.
I have been there twice. Once on a weekday evening, where you could just walk in, not too crowded and again, on a Saturday night, where you’d be better off making a reservation.
Both times, I was lazy and just ordered the platters. First time, as it was just the two of us, an Orang Dua platter ($48 for 2 pax) and the second time – the kilat Babi Rock Anthem ($88 for 4 pax) that easily fed 6 of us. Basically, the Orang Dua comes with a half-rack while the killer Babi Rock Anthem has a full slab and lots more of the items below.
It’s an easy choice, comprising a selection of grilled goodies. Like Prawns Panggang, Squid Bakar and Ayam (Chicken) Panggang. That same caramel-y rib sauce is the marinade for the Chicken Wings, so if you like that taste, you will love the wings too.
I really like the Smashed Potatoes that come with the platter too. Crispy roasted and topped with sour cream and pork scratchings, that’s your awesome vegetable count for the meal!
That and the charred Corn on the side. Pretty good.
As if we didn’t have enough protein, we ordered the Egg Tofu ($8) too. Smooth tofu with, you guessed it, more kecap manis! Yay!
We added some Nasi Goreng for the carb-lovers. Interesting, this was fried brown rice, so, something different. Could have had more of a chilli hit, but still, quite nice to round off the meal.
So, in short, I think it really depends on what kind of ribs you like. If you prefer a more sweetish sauce rather than a typically “tangy” or “spicy dry rub” style, then you will love this.
Also, I know some reviewers have compared this with the original in Bali, but hello, like you’re just going to hop on a plane tomorrow, is it? Well, yeah, you can, of course, but the point is, no need to compare – I think the ribs at Naughty Nuri’s are simply delicious!
Give it a try!
